Alborada presents an evening of short films, talks and music on diverse themes relating to Latin America. Music chosen by Alborada soundsystem will be on rotation between and after films.

The bar will be serving drinks throughout and after the Alborada event there will be a DJ night in the same venue.

Admission is FREE all night.

This month, we have a strong social commentary theme to the films. Here are the programme details:

Session one: Cuba (6.30-7pm)

A magical view through the figure of Virgilio Álvarez, an old Cuban who is about to get to his 105 years of life. Every day he rises up to walk around the whole town of Baracoa and he says that he still got a long path to live.

Session two: Bolivia (7-7.30pm)

Between the city and the countryside, subtle forms of modern slavery take place. A girl heads down from the mountain to wait by the highway for a truck into the city. Once there, amid endless walls and bars, children’s voices envelop her and Carmen arrives at the school doors. These shadowy walls will absorb her steps and silence her song.

Session three: Colombia (7.30-8.15pm)

Can hip hop be a way out of prison? This short documentary is about the influence musical expression has on three inmates at Distrital prison in Bogota, Colombia.

Session four: Chile (8.15-8.45pm)

A musical visit through the winding streets and hilltops of Chile’s beautiful port city of Valparaiso.

Session five: Argentina (8.45-9.30pm)

‘Every one of us is alone, passing through the earth’s sunlight until the darkness falls’.

An Argentinian bar is the location for a poetic contemplation of happiness and mortality.
